DJI Osmo Action 6 Review
DJI's current flagship action camera moves to a 1/1.1-inch square sensor and a variable f/2.0–4.0 aperture, which DJI calls a first for its action cameras.

The Verdict
The Osmo Action 6 is a waterproof action camera built around a square sensor. It records 4K in 16:9, 4:3 and 9:16, plus a 3840×3840 "4K Custom" frame, so one clip can later be cut into a widescreen and a vertical version. DJI pairs that with a variable aperture (f/2.0–4.0), 10-bit D-Log M and 4K at up to 120 fps.
It suits people whose footage is mostly 4K and who care about runtime, swimming or diving without a housing, and two OLED touchscreens. It is not an 8K camera in the everyday sense: DJI limits 8K to 16:9 at up to 30 fps, with fewer stabilisation and field-of-view options, no Film Tone, a lower ISO ceiling, and 8K editing in the Mimo app only on iPhone 15 Pro models and later.

In Depth
Square sensor and variable aperture
DJI's spec sheet lists a 1/1.1-inch CMOS; the product page calls it square, with 2.4 μm equivalent pixels. DJI does not publish its size in millimetres. The square shape is what enables 4K Custom: 3840×3840 at up to 60 fps, from which a 16:9 and a 9:16 version of the same clip can be cut in the edit. 4K at 100 or 120 fps is available in 16:9, 4:3 and 9:16.
The aperture is the bigger change. In Auto mode the camera works within one of five ranges, from f/2.0–4.0 (the default) to f/2.8–4.0. Large Aperture mode fixes it at f/2.0, and DJI recommends the Starburst setting (f/4.0) for city night scenes brighter than 80 lux. DJI adds that aperture modes can be limited by the shooting mode and by attached accessories.
DJI's focus numbers do not quite line up. The spec sheet gives a focus range of 0.2 m to infinity at f/4.0. The launch press release says the Macro Lens cuts the minimum focus distance "from 35 cm to just 11 cm", and the product page gives 11–75 cm with that lens. Treat 11 cm as a Macro Lens figure, not a property of the bare camera. The Macro Lens is sold separately and is splash-resistant only.
8K is there, with conditions
8K (7680×4320 at 24, 25 or 30 fps) is on DJI's current spec sheet and product page, but it was not in the November 2025 launch press release, and DJI does not say when it was added. The footnote attached to it is long: 16:9 only; stabilisation limited to RockSteady and RockSteady+; field of view limited to Standard, Natural Wide and Wide; Film Tone and Quality Priority unavailable; ISO capped at 12800, or 6400 in D-Log M. Downloading and editing 8K footage in the DJI Mimo app currently works only on iPhone 15 Pro models and later.
In practice that makes 4K at up to 120 fps the top everyday mode, with all aspect ratios available. 10-bit D-Log M works in standard video, Slow Motion and Hyperlapse. DJI lists one maximum bitrate, 120 Mbps, and does not break it down by mode.
Native slow motion goes to 4K at 120 fps (4x) and 1080p at 240 fps (8x). The 960 fps "32x Super Slow Motion" on the product page is, according to DJI's own footnote, interpolated in camera from a 1080p/240 fps clip, not a native frame rate.
Stabilisation and field of view
RockSteady 3.0 and 3.0+ cover most modes, but DJI notes that electronic stabilisation is not supported in Slow Motion and Timelapse. HorizonSteady and HorizonBalancing work in 16:9 at 1080p, 2.7K and 4K, and in 4K Custom, at up to 60 fps. For the Action 5 Pro, DJI's own footnote limits HorizonSteady to 1080p and 2.7K, so HorizonSteady at 4K is new on the Action 6.
The native field of view is 155°. The optional FOV Boost Lens widens it to 182°, though DJI says the actual angle varies slightly with distortion correction and stabilisation. That lens is splash-resistant only, not for diving, and Slow Motion is unavailable while it is attached.
Battery, cold and water
DJI rates the 1950 mAh battery at 240 minutes, recorded at 25 °C at 1080p/24 with RockSteady on and Wi-Fi, voice control, gesture control and both screens off. DJI calls the figure a reference only and adds that battery life may differ in the EU and UK because of local rules on operating temperature; it gives no separate EU figure. At the ends of the operating range, DJI's lab figures under the same settings are 167 minutes at -20 °C and 190 minutes at 45 °C. Charging to 80% takes 22 minutes and to 100% 52 minutes, per DJI, with a PD charger of 30 W or more.
The camera is waterproof to 20 m without a case and to 60 m in the Waterproof Case; DJI gives both an IP68 rating, and its comparison table adds EN13319 certification. One footnote matters for divers: DJI says the shutter/record button is disabled at around 0.14 MPa, roughly 14 m, so recording has to be started before going deeper. DJI also recommends the case for long sessions underwater or strong water impact.

FAQ
Should I shoot in 8K on the Action 6?
Only when the extra resolution is the point, for example to crop hard in a 16:9 edit. DJI restricts 8K to 16:9 at up to 30 fps, limits stabilisation to RockSteady and RockSteady+ and the field of view to Standard, Natural Wide and Wide, removes Film Tone and Quality Priority, and caps ISO at 12800 (6400 in D-Log M). Editing 8K in DJI Mimo currently needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later. For everything else, 4K at up to 120 fps is the more flexible mode.
How long does the battery last?
DJI's figure is 240 minutes, recorded at 25 °C at 1080p/24 with RockSteady on and Wi-Fi, voice control, gesture control and the screens off. Higher resolutions, higher frame rates and screen use are not covered by that number, and DJI says battery life may differ in the EU and UK. DJI's cold-weather figure under the same settings is 167 minutes at -20 °C.
Can I dive with it without a case?
DJI rates it to 20 m without a case and 60 m with the Waterproof Case, both IP68. Without the case, DJI says the shutter/record button is disabled at around 14 m, and it recommends the case for long sessions underwater or strong water impact. The Macro Lens and the FOV Boost Lens are splash-resistant only and not meant for diving.
Is it worth upgrading from the Action 5 Pro?
The documented changes are the larger 1/1.1-inch square sensor (the Action 5 Pro has 1/1.3-inch), the variable aperture, HorizonSteady at 4K and an 8K mode with restrictions. Battery capacity is the same 1950 mAh, and both are rated to 20 m without a case. The Action 6 vs Action 5 Pro comparison goes through it point by point.
Final Recommendation
The Osmo Action 6 is a strong 4K action camera with an 8K mode that DJI itself hedges with conditions. Its strengths are the square sensor with 4K Custom framing, the variable aperture, 20 m waterproofing without a case, 50 GB of usable internal storage and the 240-minute runtime rating.
Buy it if: You shoot mostly 4K (up to 120 fps), want horizontal and vertical versions from one clip, swim or dive without a housing, or record long sessions at 1080p.
Skip it if: You want 8K without restrictions or a higher bitrate (the GoPro Mission 1 Pro lists 8K60 and 240 Mbps), need 32-bit float audio, or want a GPS receiver in the camera.
