DJI Osmo Action 6 vs GoPro Mission 1 Pro

DJI's flagship action camera against the MISSION 1 PRO, the middle model of GoPro's MISSION 1 series. The GoPro has more video headroom on paper: 8K60, 8K open gate, 4K240 and twice the bitrate. The DJI is lighter and has a variable aperture and built-in storage.

Sources: DJI's Osmo Action 6 spec sheet and product page; GoPro's MISSION 1 series tech specs and FAQ (MISSION 1 PRO column) and launch release. Both checked 16 October 2026. Neither maker says what its weight figure includes.

Sensor and Lens

By type designation the GoPro's 1-inch sensor is the larger of the two (the DJI's is 1/1.1-inch). Neither maker publishes the dimensions in millimetres, so the size of the gap cannot be put in numbers from their data. Both also quote pixel sizes, but in different terms (DJI 2.4 µm "equivalent", GoPro 1.6 µm native and 3.2 µm "fused"), so those do not compare directly either.

The shapes lead to different framing tools. DJI's square sensor gives 4K Custom (3840×3840 up to 60 fps); GoPro offers 8K Open Gate in 4:3 up to 30 fps. Both leave room to cut horizontal and vertical versions from one clip. On the lens side, the Action 6 has a variable f/2.0–4.0 aperture and a 155° native field of view; the Mission 1 Pro is fixed at F2.8 with 159°.

Winner: Mission 1 Pro on sensor type, Action 6 on aperture flexibility.

Video

This is the clearest gap. The Mission 1 Pro lists 8K at up to 60 fps, 8K Open Gate at up to 30 fps, 4K at up to 240 fps and 1080p/1440p at up to 480 fps, with 10-bit GP-Log2, HLG and up to 240 Mbps. The Action 6 lists 4K at up to 120 fps as its everyday top mode, 1080p at up to 240 fps and 120 Mbps with 10-bit D-Log M. Its 8K mode runs at up to 30 fps in 16:9 only, with restricted stabilisation and field-of-view options, no Film Tone and a maximum ISO of 12800 (6400 in D-Log M).

Both advertise a 32x, 960 fps slow motion at 1080p. DJI's footnote says its version is interpolated in camera from a 1080p/240 fps clip; GoPro lists Burst Slo-Mo at 32x (960 fps) for 10 seconds and does not say how it is produced.

Winner: Mission 1 Pro.

Stabilisation

DJI documents where its stabilisation stops: HorizonSteady and HorizonBalancing work in 16:9 and 4K Custom at up to 60 fps, electronic stabilisation is not supported in Slow Motion and Timelapse, and 8K is limited to RockSteady and RockSteady+. GoPro lists HyperSmooth with 360° Horizon Lock but publishes no such limits by mode.

Winner: Cannot be called from the spec sheets. Before buying either for horizon-locked high-frame-rate footage, check that the mode you need supports it.

Audio

GoPro's spec sheet lists four microphones, RAW audio as 24-bit PCM or 32-bit float, up to three tracks, wireless and USB audio, manual audio controls and timecode synchronisation. DJI lists three microphones recording 48 kHz / 16-bit AAC, plus direct connection to two DJI microphone transmitters without a receiver (the first-generation DJI Mic is not supported).

Winner: Mission 1 Pro.

Battery, Water and Size

The runtime figures cannot be ranked. DJI's 240 minutes was measured at 1080p/24 and 25 °C with RockSteady on and Wi-Fi and the screens off, and DJI says it may differ in the EU and UK. GoPro's figures (up to 5 hours at 1080p30 in Endurance Mode, 3+ hours at 4K30, up to 1.5 hours at 8K30) come from the FAQ for the whole MISSION 1 series and state no temperature or settings. The GoPro's battery has more capacity (2150 vs 1950 mAh).

Both are rated to 20 m without a housing and 60 m with one. DJI adds that the Action 6's shutter/record button is disabled at around 14 m without the case; GoPro does not say whether its 20 m rating holds with the removable lens hood fitted. The Action 6 weighs 149 g against 207 g, has 64 GB of built-in storage (50 GB usable) and OLED touchscreens on both sides. The Mission 1 Pro has GPS, which DJI's spec sheet does not list.

Winner: Action 6 on weight and built-in storage; Mission 1 Pro on GPS.

FAQ

Which camera has the bigger sensor?

By type designation the GoPro Mission 1 Pro (1-inch) against 1/1.1-inch for the Action 6. Neither DJI nor GoPro publishes the sensor dimensions in millimetres, so the exact difference is not known from the makers' data.

Which battery lasts longer?

The makers' figures do not allow a ranking. DJI gives 240 minutes for the Action 6 under stated conditions (1080p/24, 25 °C, screens and Wi-Fi off). GoPro gives approximate "up to" figures for the whole MISSION 1 series (up to 5 hours at 1080p30 in Endurance Mode) without temperature or settings. The GoPro's battery has the larger capacity, 2150 mAh against 1950 mAh.

Which one is better for swimming and diving?

Both are rated to 20 m without a housing and 60 m with one. DJI notes that the Action 6's shutter/record button is disabled at around 14 m without the case, so start recording before going deeper. GoPro does not say whether its 20 m rating applies with the removable lens hood fitted.

Do I need the Mission 1 Pro's 8K?

Only if you crop or reframe heavily, want 8K at 50 or 60 fps, or want the 4:3 open gate frame for horizontal and vertical versions. If 4K is your delivery format and 120 fps is enough, the Action 6 covers it, and its 4K Custom mode also allows horizontal and vertical crops.

Bottom Line

For filmmakers and anyone who grades or records sound on the camera: the GoPro Mission 1 Pro, for 8K60, open gate, 4K240, 240 Mbps and 32-bit float audio.

For a lighter all-round action camera: the DJI Osmo Action 6, for 58 g less weight, a variable aperture, built-in storage and a runtime figure with stated conditions.
