DJI Osmo Pocket 4 vs Pocket 4P

Two pocket gimbals from the same generation. The Pocket 4 has one camera, a 1-inch sensor behind a 20 mm f/2.0 lens. The Pocket 4P adds a second camera, a 60 mm f/1.8 tele for 3x optical zoom, plus DJI's D-Log 2 profile and ActiveTrack 8.0. The question is whether you will use the tele often enough to carry 39.5 g more and give up 30 minutes of rated runtime.

The Tele Camera: What 60 mm Adds

The 4P's second camera has its own 1/1.28-inch sensor and a 60 mm equivalent f/1.8 lens. Sixty is three times the main camera's 20 mm, so the 3x step is optical. For the same head-and-shoulders framing, the 4P can stand three times further from the subject than a 20 mm lens would need, which keeps the camera out of people's faces and flattens perspective. On the Pocket 4, tighter framing means its 2x lossless zoom or up to 4x of digital zoom in video.

  • Sensor size: the tele's 1/1.28-inch sensor is smaller than the 1-inch main sensor, and DJI rates it at 14 stops rather than the main camera's up to 17.
  • ISO: 50 to 12,800 on the tele (25,600 in Low-Light Video).
  • Slow motion: 4K at up to 200 fps on the tele, against 240 on the main camera.
  • Zoom range: up to 12x in video and 9x in photos, digital beyond 3x; in Slow Motion and Timelapse only the 1x and 3x positions.

Winner: Pocket 4P, if you film other people. If you film yourself, you will rarely switch to it.

Colour and Grading

DJI quotes 14 stops for the Pocket 4 in both its Normal and D-Log profiles. For the 4P's main camera it quotes up to 17 stops, but only in the new D-Log 2 profile, which works at 1x zoom only. Both record 10-bit, both offer HDR 10-bit video, and neither lists HLG.

The clearer difference is slow motion. DJI states that D-Log works in both normal video and Slow Motion on the 4P. For the Pocket 4, its own pages disagree: the product page says Slow Motion supports D-Log, a footnote on the same page limits 10-bit D-Log to normal Video mode.

Winner: Pocket 4P, on DJI's figures and on the clearer slow-motion statement.

Tracking and Autofocus

Both use what DJI calls Intelligent AF; DJI does not say whether either uses phase detection. The Pocket 4 runs ActiveTrack 7.0, which DJI says keeps tracking at 4x zoom. The 4P runs ActiveTrack 8.0, which DJI says tracks at up to 12x zoom and holds subjects centred across different holding positions. The 4P also has Multi-Person Tracking for up to eight people (no zooming while it is active) and lets you register up to three subjects.

Winner: Pocket 4P.

Size, Weight and Runtime

  • Size: the 4P is 15.3 mm longer and 18.9 mm wider; both are 33.5 mm deep.
  • Weight: 230 g against 190.5 g, a difference of 39.5 g.
  • Runtime: both have a 1545 mAh, 11.95 Wh battery, but DJI rates the Pocket 4 for 240 minutes and the 4P for 210 under the same test.
  • Storage: 107 GB built in on the Pocket 4, 103 GB on the 4P; both add microSD up to 1 TB.
  • Audio: DJI promises four-channel recording with DJI Mic 2, Mic 3 and Mic Mini transmitters on the Pocket 4. Its 4P pages do not say the same.

Winner: Pocket 4.

FAQ

Is the 4P's main camera the same as the Pocket 4's?

Both are 1-inch cameras behind a 20 mm equivalent f/2.0 lens, but DJI's specs differ: the 4P's main camera is listed with LOFIC, up to 17 stops in D-Log 2, ISO 100 to 25,600 instead of 50 to 12,800, focus from 0.09 m instead of 0.2 m, and a 1/16000 s shutter instead of 1/8000 s. DJI does not say whether the sensor is shared.

How far can the Pocket 4 zoom without a tele?

2x lossless, and up to 4x digital in 4K, 3K and 1080p video. Zoom is not available in Low-Light, Slow Motion or Timelapse. All of it comes from the single 20 mm camera.

Does the Pocket 4P record four-channel audio with a DJI Mic?

DJI does not say. The Pocket 4's product page and press release promise four-channel recording with Mic 2, Mic 3 and Mic Mini transmitters. The 4P's press release lists OsmoAudio microphones among compatible accessories, but neither it nor the 4P's product page mentions four-channel recording. If that workflow matters, check DJI's current compatibility notes before choosing the 4P.

Which is better for vertical video?

Both record vertical video at 3K (1728 × 3072) or 1080p at up to 60 fps. DJI notes for the 4P that 4K is not available when shooting vertically. For vertical clips the deciding factor is the same as for horizontal ones: whether you need the tele.

Bottom Line

For self-filming vloggers: The DJI Osmo Pocket 4. It is lighter, narrower and rated 30 minutes longer, and its single 20 mm camera is the one you would use anyway.

For filming other people: The DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. The 60 mm tele, D-Log 2 and ActiveTrack 8.0 at up to 12x are worth the 39.5 g if you use them on most shoots.
