Resolution: 66.8 Against 61 Megapixels

The A7R VI's files are 9,984 × 6,656 pixels, the A7R V's 9,504 × 6,336: 5% more width and 5.8 megapixels more in total. That is a real but small step. If 61 megapixels already limit you, 66.8 will not change your work much; if they do not, resolution alone is no reason to switch.

Our read: a narrow edge to the A7R VI.

Speed: the Real Change

The A7R V tops out at 10 fps, and at 7 fps in the higher-quality raw modes. The A7R VI keeps 10 fps on the mechanical shutter and adds 30 fps with the electronic shutter, with a buffer of 150 compressed RAW frames on a CFexpress Type A card per Sony's Help Guide. In lossless or HQ compressed RAW the electronic rate is capped at 15 fps, and the lossless buffer drops to 60 frames. Autofocus goes from 693 to up to 759 phase-detection points.

Our read: the A7R VI, clearly, if you photograph anything that moves.

Video

The A7R V records 8K at 24p and 4K at 60p, both with a 1.24x crop, and uses the full sensor width only up to 4K30. The A7R VI records 8K at 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit, also with a narrower angle of view, for which Sony gives no factor. Its new mode is 4K120 at full width, available with "4K angle of View Priority" on, which disables part of the noise reduction processing. It can also send RAW video over HDMI to an external recorder at 4,576 × 2,576 up to 60p.

Our read: the A7R VI, with the 8K crop still to plan around.

Stabilisation, Viewfinder and Handling

Sony rates the A7R VI's in-body stabilisation at 8.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 at the periphery, to CIPA 2024 with the FE 50mm F1.2 GM. Whether the A7R V's 8 stops were measured on the same terms is not stated, so treat the half-stop difference as indicative.

The rest of the handling is close. Both have a 9.44M-dot viewfinder at 0.9x, two slots that each take CFexpress Type A or SD, the same ISO range and shutter range, and 713 against 723 g with battery and SD card. The battery changes: the A7R VI uses the NP-SA100, rated at approx. 710 shots on the screen, against the A7R V's NP-FZ100 at 530. If you own NP-FZ100 spares, check compatibility before counting on them.

Bottom Line

The upgrade is speed and video, not resolution. The A7R VI turns a deliberate 10 fps camera into one that can also shoot 30 fps and records 8K30 and 4K120.

The A7R V still delivers 61 megapixels, the same viewfinder specification and the same card slots. If you never needed more than 10 fps, it remains a complete high-resolution body.

FAQ

Is the A7R VI's sensor bigger?

Marginally. Sony gives 35.9 × 24.0 mm for the A7R VI and 35.7 × 23.8 mm for the A7R V. Both are full frame.

Do they use the same battery?

No. The A7R VI is rated with the NP-SA100, the A7R V with the NP-FZ100. Check compatibility before relying on older spares.

Is the 8K mode cropped on both?

Yes. The A7R V's 8K24 has a 1.24x crop. Sony says the A7R VI's 8K30 has a narrower angle of view but gives no crop factor.
