Panasonic Lumix GH7 Review
The GH line always won on features and lost on autofocus. The GH7 closes that gap: phase detection is finally here, and it arrives alongside internal ProRes RAW and 32-bit float audio that no rival offers at this price.

The Verdict
This is the most capable video camera per euro on the market, with one condition: you accept a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Internal ProRes RAW to a CFexpress card, open gate 5.8K for vertical and horizontal delivery from one take, and unlimited recording with active cooling are features that used to require a cinema body.
The 32-bit float audio through the optional XLR unit is the quiet headline. It removes gain setting from the shoot entirely — a clipped take can be pulled back in post. If you are a solo operator recording interviews, that alone can justify the camera.

Open Gate, and what it is for
Open Gate records the full 4:3 area of the sensor up to 5.8K rather than cropping to a delivery aspect ratio. One take then yields a 16:9 edit and a 9:16 vertical cut without reshooting or losing resolution to a crop of a crop. For anyone delivering the same shoot to a cinema timeline and a phone screen, this single feature restructures the day.
Internal ProRes RAW
ProRes RAW recorded to a CFexpress Type B card inside the body, with no external recorder in the rig. That used to mean an Atomos on an arm, a second battery system and a cable that eventually fails. The GH7 removes all three. 4K and C4K run from 24p to 120p with selectable 8-bit or 10-bit, All-Intra or Long GOP.
32-bit float audio
With the optional XLR unit the camera records 32-bit float, which is the quiet headline. Levels stop being a decision made under pressure at the start of a take: a clipped interview can be pulled back in post because the float format never actually clips. For a solo operator running camera and sound at once, that alone can justify the body.
Heat, and why the fan matters
The internal cooling fan runs continuously and there is no recording limit. That is the difference between a body that can cover a full conference session and one that stops at an arbitrary point and asks you to press record again. It is also why this is not a small camera: 138.4 × 100.3 × 99.6 mm and 721 g exist partly to hold a fan and the air path around it.
The Micro Four Thirds condition
Everything above comes with one condition: a 17.3 × 13.0 mm sensor. That is roughly a quarter the area of full frame, which costs you low-light headroom and makes shallow depth of field harder to reach at the same framing. In exchange the lenses are smaller, lighter and cheaper, and the crop factor works in your favour for reach. Decide on the sensor first; the feature list only matters if that trade is acceptable.
Stills, and Dynamic Range Boost
25.2 megapixels at 5,776 × 4,336, up to 60 fps with the electronic shutter in AF-S and 14 fps mechanical, with up to 7.5 stops of in-body stabilisation. Dynamic Range Boost adds a mode Panasonic rates at 13+ stops. This is a video body that takes stills seriously rather than a stills body that films — but the stills are not an afterthought.

FAQ
GH7 or a full-frame body?
If you need shallow depth of field or clean ISO 12,800, go full-frame. If you need long records, internal RAW and 32-bit float on a budget, nothing full-frame matches this.
Is Micro Four Thirds a dealbreaker?
For narrative and low light, it is a real limit. For documentary, corporate and event work in controlled light, the smaller sensor buys you smaller lenses and deeper focus, which is often an advantage.
Do I need CFexpress?
Only for ProRes RAW and the highest-bitrate All-Intra modes. Everything else records to SD.
