Panasonic Lumix GH7 Review
The GH line always won on features and lost on autofocus. The GH7 closes that gap: phase detection is finally here, and it arrives alongside internal ProRes RAW and 32-bit float audio that no rival offers at this price.
The Verdict
This is the most capable video camera per euro on the market, with one condition: you accept a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Internal ProRes RAW to a CFexpress card, open gate 5.8K for vertical and horizontal delivery from one take, and unlimited recording with active cooling are features that used to require a cinema body.
The 32-bit float audio through the optional XLR unit is the quiet headline. It removes gain setting from the shoot entirely — a clipped take can be pulled back in post. If you are a solo operator recording interviews, that alone can justify the camera.

Autofocus
The first GH with phase detection. Tracking holds through walk-ins and profile turns — the specific failure the contrast-detect GH6 was known for.
Codecs and RAW
ProRes RAW HQ records straight to a CFexpress Type B card. There is no external recorder in the chain, which removes a battery, a cable and a failure point.
Audio
With the DMW-XLR2 unit the camera records 32-bit float. Levels stop being a decision made under pressure at the start of a take.
Heat
The fan runs continuously and the camera has no recording limit. That is the difference between a body that can cover a conference and one that cannot.

FAQ
GH7 or a full-frame body?
If you need shallow depth of field or clean ISO 12,800, go full-frame. If you need long records, internal RAW and 32-bit float on a budget, nothing full-frame matches this.
Is Micro Four Thirds a dealbreaker?
For narrative and low light, it is a real limit. For documentary, corporate and event work in controlled light, the smaller sensor buys you smaller lenses and deeper focus, which is often an advantage.
Do I need CFexpress?
Only for ProRes RAW and the highest-bitrate All-Intra modes. Everything else records to SD.
